University of the Arts London, Arts Learning and Teaching Online (ALTO)

The Arts Learning and Teaching Online (ALTO) project aims to build a collection of online Open Educational Resources (OERs) for arts subjects, based around themed areas of significant strategic importance to the University of the Arts (UAL) and the wider arts education community (primarily but not exclusively higher and further education). The collection will extend access to digital resources in underrepresented subject areas, support student transitions at critical stages in their education and contribute to the preservation of endangered subjects.

Aims and Objectives

The creation of a teaching and learning repository for UAL, where teaching and learning support staff can deposit and share their learning materials and find resources developed by others. A substantial initial set of learning resources to deposited that will be openly accessible to the wider community.

  • A sustainable approach to supporting staff in preparing OER
  • An internal process for review and approval OER
  • An enhanced UAL repository provision

Key Focus Areas

  1. The professionalisation of education to include the provision of HE-level education to new staff who teach at any level, and/or sustainable development;
  2. Arts subjects including the performing arts - using a range of text-based and non-text based resources.
