The complexities surrounding how we can understand the relationship between research and teaching in academic work is partly underpinned by the debate on the significance of disciplinary location of academic staff. There is also the importance of institutional location and the specific institutional and departmental cultures within which academics are situated in relation to how these may shape academic experiences and perceptions.
This project is concerned with exploring the experiences and conceptions that academics in different disciplinary areas have about 'research' and 'teaching', the relationship between these activities and their views on ways in which this may enhance the student learning experience. The study is concerned to explore the experiences and perceptions of academics by locating them within specific institutional/departmental and disciplinary cultures and exploring how this may impact on their conceptions of 'research', 'teaching' and the relationships between them.
