This paper draws on both interviews with 'stakeholders' and existing literature to examine the question of relevance facing the teacher education 'institution' in the induction period.

It provides a background to developments in teacher induction in Scotland and an outline of a proposed framework. While a coherent, multiple role for higher education in induction is also constructed, the principles and tensions which determine the possibility of such an involvement are considered in conclusion.
