Welcome from the Discipline Lead for Law

Michael Bromby has been appointed as the Discipline Lead for Law, and this post replaces the subject specific support previously delivered from the UK Centre for Legal Education (UKCLE) in Warwick.  Michael joined The Higher Education Academy on 1 August 2011, having previously worked for the UKCLE as their Scotland Consultant, and is seconded to The Academy from Glasgow Caledonian University’s law department.

Learning in Law Annual Conference 2012

The annual conference will continue to run under the auspices of The Higher Education Academy.  The conference will take place in the Chancellors Conference Suite at the University of Warwick on Friday 3rd and the morning of Saturday 4th February 2012.  The Learning in Law Annual Conference details keynote speakers and accepted parallel sessions are available online.

Keynote Speaker

The Learning in Law Annual Conference is pleased to have Malcolm Tight (professor of Higher Education at Lancaster University) deliver a keynote speech.  Professor Tight’s research covers a broad area of post-compulsory education, including the development of higher education research, comparative studies and changing patterns of academic work.  The second edition of his book ‘Researching Higher Education’ will be published by the Open University Press in 2012.

Call for Papers

The Conference organisers invite submissions for parallel session presentations of approximately 500-1,000 words.  An extended call for papers is still open.  These should be submitted in Word or PDF to michael.bromby@heacademy.ac.uk before Friday 6th January 2012.  Papers are invited to cover all areas of legal education, ranging from the undergraduate level to vocational stages and professional legal education.
Topic areas have in the past included: clinical and experiential learning, skills, technology, internationalisation, ethics and professionalism, employability, pedagogy, assessment, student perspectives, innovation and identity.

Legal Education and Training Review (LETR)

The website for LETR is now available.  This is a joint project of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), the Bar Standards Board (BSB) and the Institute of Legal Executives Professional Standards (IPS). It constitutes a fundamental, evidence-based review of education and training requirements across regulated and non-regulated legal services in England and Wales.

Our funding

Workshop and Seminar Series

We are pleased to invite subscribing UK Higher Education Institutions, and Further Education Colleges delivering Higher Education, to be part of a workshop and seminar series. Funding has been provided to enable us to offer a grant of up to £1000 to institutions to host and deliver a workshop or seminar on teaching and learning in a discipline context. An additional fund of up to £500 is available for speaker expenses.  Open Call.

Teaching Development Grants

Individual Grant Scheme
Over the next year there will be a total of £1.5 million of funding available for individual grants, departmental grants and collaborative grants. This bid-based development grant funding exists to stimulate evidence-based research and encourage innovations in learning and teaching that have the potential for sector-wide impact.

There are two separate calls for individuals grant scheme bids. In each of the two phases there is a total of £315,000 available with a maximum of £7,000 per project. Call opens - Tuesday January 3rd 2012.  Submission deadline - Midnight Sunday February 19th 2012.  Projects to commence - May 14th 2012.

Collaborative Grant Scheme
A total of £570,000 will be available with a maximum of £60,000 per project. Project duration will be 18 months.  Collaboration may be cross institution and/or interdisciplinary. The project lead must be a Fellow of the Academy.  Successful bids will demonstrate longitudinal impact and will include evaluation and dissemination criteria. Matching support should be sought from the participating higher education institutions.  Call opens - Monday February 27th 2012.  Submission deadline - Midnight Sunday April 22nd 2012.  Projects to commence - July 2nd 2012.

HEA UK travel fund

The HEA’s new UK travel fund will enable staff and students in UK higher education to exchange and disseminate good practice in learning, teaching and assessment and engage with their peers. The funding may be used to help the applicant(s) attend conferences, network meetings and special interest groups that are being run in the UK. Please note that funding may not be used for events that are being held outside the UK

OER3 PG Certificate Development Projects

In association with JISC, we are pleased to invite the submission of proposals for projects to develop Post Graduate Certificate programmes for new staff so that it becomes culturally acceptable for them to develop, use and repurpose Open Educational Resources in their evolving teaching practice. Funding has been provided by the Higher Education Funding Council for England to enable us to offer grants of up to £20,000 per project. Deadline 9th January 2012.

International Scholarship Scheme

 This new scheme is aimed at supporting individuals in the sector to undertake specific investigations outside of the UK and deliver specific outcomes for dissemination within the UK sector at the end of the scholarship through various means, as appropriate to enhance the UK student learning experience. Submission deadline - Tuesday 31st January 2012.

 The HEA’s new UK travel fund can be used to support attendance at any of these events, subsistence, travel, conference/event fees up to £300 per person and £500 for a team.  They can be attending HEA or non-HEA events, and we even fund students!
