Action Sets

Action Sets

Action Sets are specific projects funded and supported by the Academy in Wales. There are currently two Action Sets running in Wales.

1. First Year Student Experience Action Set

Identified by the Welsh Institutional Group as a priority at the start of Academic Year 2008-9 an Action Set was established to identify a focus for the sector. Led by Karen Fitzgibbon at the University of Glamorgan, Bangor University, Aberystwyth University, Cardiff University, the University of Glamorgan, Glyndwr University, Swansea University, the University of Wales, Newport and the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC) have all contributed to the project.

The group identified two key themes central to the first year student experience - ‘student engagement' and ‘communities of practice'. The group used a wiki to facilitate data gathering, and following this, a number of case studies from current practice were identified and published to be shared across the sector. A range of case studies were published in ‘First Year Student Experience Wales: a Practice guide'.

The group is currently working on a second publication, which will be available on these pages soon.

2. Research-Teaching Nexus Action Set

Identified as a strategic priority in 2005, the inter-relationship between research and teaching is an important one for Welsh HEIs in terms of both how that relationship impacts on the student experience and how the nexus contributes to scholarly activity, research and excellence in teaching as identifies in ‘Activity 5' of the UK Professional Standards Framework. This area of work has been supported by Emeritus Professor Alan Jenkins.

Simon Haslett of the University of Wales, Newport is leading this Action Set which aims to explore current approaches in Welsh HEIs to the Research-Teaching Nexus. The group aim to help develop a better understanding of effective practices which nurture this relationship, and how those can benefit the student learning experience.

The group has a blog and will be publishing a collection of case studies from across Wales in summer 2010. The publication will be made available on these pages.
