We are delighted to announce the three keynote speakers for our Teaching and Learning Conference 2018 in Birmingham, ‘Teaching in the spotlight: Learning from global communities’. Structured over three days from 3-5 July, the conference will provide a platform for higher education professionals to share their experiences, ideas, research and good practice in a community of their peers and learn from internationally respected speakers.
Our first keynote speaker on Day One will be Professor Christine Jarvis, PVC Teaching and Learning, University of Huddersfield. As PVC she is responsible for the University’s Teaching and Learning Strategy, for working with Schools and Services to secure an excellent student experience and working with registry to ensure the quality of the University’s provision. Christine began her career working in community education with unemployed young people and went on to teach a wide range of subjects and students in further and adult education. She believes that all learners regardless of background or ability deserve the best educational experience. She also believes that imaginative and creative work should play an important part in education at all levels and that their contribution to intellectual and affective development is profound.
Day Two’s speaker will be John Gill, editor of Times Higher Education. John joined THE as a reporter in 2007 and was news editor for four years before taking on his current role in 2012. John has been closely involved in the development of THE’s World University Rankings portfolio over the last eight years, and was called to give evidence to the recent parliamentary inquiry into teaching metrics. He regularly speaks at higher education conferences, including THE’s World Summit Series, and chairs the judging panel on the annual THE Awards.
Our final keynote speaker on Day Three is Shai Reshef, President of University of the People – the world’s first tuition-free, non-profit, accredited online academic institution dedicated to opening access to higher education. Shai has over 25 years of experience in the international education market, and has been widely recognised for his work with UoPeople. An expert on the intersection of education and technology, Shai has spoken internationally at numerous conferences including TED, World Economic Forum, Google’s Higher Education Summit, The Economist’s Annual Human Potential Summit and the Schools for Tomorrow Event for the New York Times.
Advance HE’s 2018 Teaching and Learning Conference will position the spotlight firmly on teaching in a global context, in particular how we can learn from global communities to ensure the best student experience for all and the ongoing development and professionalisation of the HE teaching community. We look forward to welcoming delegates to join us for what promises to be a rich and thought-provoking three days.
