Following a successful inaugural year for the Annual Debate, the 2018 conference will welcome back the evening event. We have been thrilled with the response to the selection of this year’s topic – over 800 of you have cast your vote in the last month. We can now announce that the most popular motion for the 2018 Teaching and Learning Debate is:
"This House believes that for the future of higher education to be truly global, education must be free for all"
We crowdsourced ideas for the potential topics for the debate earlier in the year through our networks and communities, which resulted in the following short-list of five options, all based around global issues in higher education:
This House believes that…
...the quality of teaching would improve if students were offered ‘pay as you feel’ education.
...only through the delivery of excellent teaching can we begin to address any of the world’s problems.
...all universities should be explicitly equipping students for the workplace.
...too many people are going to university.
...for the future of higher education to be truly global, education must be free for all.
The debate takes place on 4 July 2018 in Birmingham, during our teaching and learning conference, Teaching in the spotlight: Learning from global communities. Structured over three days (3-6 July), the conference provides a platform for higher education professionals to share their experiences, ideas, research and good practice in a community of their peers and learn from internationally respected speakers. The format allows for cross-fertilisation of pedagogies, with a day dedicated to addressing sector priorities, such as retention, assessment and employability, sandwiched between two days of discipline-led activities.
The debate uses an adapted parliamentary style format over 90 minutes, with a host overseeing proceedings and four expert panellists (two arguing for the motion and two against). As well as the lively debate and responses from the audience, the evening includes a drinks reception and a three course meal and is an excellent and entertaining networking opportunity for delegates.
