Helping students adapt to and through higher education; developing a sense of belonging; facilitating social mobility; addressing attainment gaps; embedding inclusive practice; and, depending on where you are if you're based in the UK, navigating OFFA access agreements, HESA data returns, KIS data, TEF. We know that student retention and the personal, social, economic and reputational consequences of student success are of critical importance to you. Whether you are looking at student access, retention, attainment and progression from a programme, department, faculty or an institution-wide perspective, HEA will work with you.
HEA framework for retention
Our coordination of the What works? Student retention and success programme (in partnership with Action on Access and funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and HEFCE), together with 10+ years of other scholarly research and practice have shaped our approach to student retention and informed our framework for student access, retention, attainment and progression.
Our framework for student access, retention, attainment and progression in HE is an integral part of the HEA frameWORKS series. Developed with the sector for the sector, the series covers key thematic priorities that impact upon the quality of teaching and learning in HE. HEA frameWORKS provide a shared point of reference and common language to shape and review policy, process and practice in order to enhance student success.
“The Higher Education Academy frameworks are evidence-based and provide the higher education sector with a national reference point to enable the institution to develop its own approach according to local circumstances as well as benchmarking performance.” Universities UK (2016), p.73, Working in partnership: enabling social mobility.
HEA retention framework audit
An HEA retention audit is a diagnostic tool helping you determine where you are on your journey towards successfully embedding this core priority. Aligned to our HEA student retention framework, a completed audit is a powerful tool that provides:
- Evidence to build a case for excellence in learning and teaching
- An overview of the scale of implementation at institution, faculty, department, programme and/or individual level
- A benchmark from which to evidence progress and plan for the future
- A dialogical tool to prompt reflection, debate and discussion of key issues in retention
- A self (or peer) assessment tool to promote staff engagement in the enhancement of retention
- The means to identify areas for future consideration.
Benchmarking Best Practice
Gain a clear picture of where you currently stand
Student retention and success is complex. When you are looking to develop your capacities in addressing student attrition, closing attainment gaps and improving student outcomes it can help to work in collaboration.
Benchmarking Best Practice brings higher education providers together to identify common challenges and share learning and best practice. This collaborative programme involves an initial audit exercise to help you understand your issues in context as well as highlighting areas of concern. Networking, bespoke and targeted supported will then develop your expertise in designing interventions that inform your planning and development of your retention strategy and practice.
