HEA Student Surveys in institutional KPIs
Student Surveys provide insight and metrics which enable institutions to get closer to the student experience and understand their needs. A number of our partners have embedded HEA Student Surveys in their KPIs, helping shine a light on issues, inform decisions, and drive enhancements.
Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES)
The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) is a sector-wide survey to gain insight from postgraduate research students about their learning and supervision experience. No matter where your higher education institution is located in the world, this survey can benefit your institution with:
- valuable data to inform enhancements to the experience of postgraduate researchers
- confidential benchmarking against other institutions
- the addition of tailored questions
Impact of PRES
The University of Chichester’s participation in PRES has provided them with a tool with which to build externality into internal processes, enabling a better understanding of their own provision compared to others through their inclusion in national benchmarking. The university was aiming for submitting for degree awarding powers, which were awarded in 2014,.The university has made some active changes to their provision since PRES highlighted an issue around research culture. Through doing so the experiences of postgraduate researchers has been explored and developed.
Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES)
The Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) provides insight from taught postgraduate students about their learning and teaching experience. Wherever you are in the world, by participating in the PTES you will benefit from:
- critical data that informs enhancements to your learning and teaching
- confidential and sophisticated benchmarking helping you understand how you compare with your peers and competitors - over 100 institutions each year
- the opportunity to include additional questions, specific to your institutional priorities
PTES was recently described by sector commentators, WonkHE, as "the nearest equivalent to the NSS for PGT students," but with greater focus on enhancement.
Impact of PTES
“As we are strong performers in the National Student Survey (NSS), we wrongly assumed our students would be equally satisfied with our postgraduate provision. PTES results prompted a need for change, leading us to begin to entirely restructure our postgraduate offering.”
