One of the main transitional problems facing undergraduate students is the challenge of financing their period in higher education. School leavers are entering university with inadequate personal finance skills to manage their resources effectively while studying. This project involved the development of a web-based diagnostic instrument that identifies the level of first experience HE students' personal financial awareness in areas that are of importance to them such as student loans and grants, employment issues, banking and finance and general expenditure. The project further investigated the intention and need of students to work part-time whilst studying, their budgeting capabilities and intention to budget and their attitude to debt as a consequence of attending university. The results obtained to date reveal significant weaknesses in students' personal financial awareness.
