Technician of the Year for Built Environment
Chet Narsih began his career as a technician for the School of the Built Environment, University of Salford, in 1999. After five years Chet was promoted to Learning Resource Centre Manager where he gained invaluable experience and expertise in information systems and digital design technologies. The position also involved managing a computer suite/library of learning resources for the School. From this point onwards, Chet began to work more closely with students and developed a deeper understanding of the range of student learning needs and requirements. As a result, his role involved supporting the technical and curricula needs of the students, offering assistance ranging from simple general printing and formatting to more advanced hardware and software queries.
In his current role as Specialist Technical Demonstrator, Chet is required to provide support and services in 3D printing, laser cutting and computer numerical controlled (CNC) milling. He also assists in classroom teaching with computer aided activities.
Over the course of his career, Chet has received excellent feedback from staff and students on the quality of service he provides. One colleague commented: “Throughout my three years here, Chet has never refused anyone that needed help, and has shown a desire for continuous learning.” Another said: “Chet brings forward the best of both technical knowledge and amicable attitude in the work environment – it’s a pleasure to work with him.”
Chet’s working philosophy is that he is there to help students achieve their potential. “Sometimes, good will and simple guiding advice is hugely appreciated,” he explains. “Often this is all it takes to improve students’ confidence which leads to greater success and the overall quality of learning experience.”
