Director, National Survey of Student Engagement
Associate Professor, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, Indiana University
Alexander C. McCormick has been the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) director since January 2008. He also holds a faculty appointment in the Indiana University School of Education’s Educational Leadership and Policy Studies department, where he teaches in the Higher Education and Student Affairs program.
Through his work with NSSE, Alexander aims to enrich the national discourse about quality and accountability in higher education, while also providing institutions with tools they can use to diagnose and improve undergraduate teaching and learning. His research interests centre around assessment and accountability in higher education, and also organisational change and improvement in higher education.
Alexander was a member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Expert Group to advise on the development of the "contextual dimension" component of the Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes. He has also collaborated and consulted with in-country experts leading adaptations of the US-based National Survey of Student Engagement. These adaptations include the Australasian Survey of Student Engagement, the Chinese College Student Survey, the Indonesian Survey of Student Learning Activities, the Irish Survey of Student Engagement, K-NSSE (Korea), the South African Survey of Student Engagement, and the UK Engagement Survey.
