Dr Joanna Hendy’s passion for teaching stems from her Masters studies at the State University New York, where she studied for a degree in Adapted Physical Activity. Her pedagogy and research is nurtured by her desire to create stimulating and inclusive learning landscapes for all learners. Joanna has worked in HE for over 16 years and developed the field of Adapted Physical Activity and Disability Sport at the University of Gloucestershire.
She received a University Teaching Fellow in 2016. Joanna is a Lead Tutor for Sports Coach UK and EFDS, delivering courses on inclusion and inclusive PE. Joanna recently moved to Cardiff Metropolitan University, taking on the role of Principal Lecturer in Quality Enhancement in the LTDU.
Impact of work
Joanna set up a range of placement opportunities for the students in disability sport, including the Gloucester Wheelchair Rugby club and No Limits, a disability sport club for young people in the local community. She has also supported the development of various courses for national sports organisations, including Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby and Riding for the Disabled. She has been involved in a number of projects that have enhanced the student experience at the University of Gloucestershire, including; the development of the personal tutor system, induction, enhanced year and UNIversal Sport. She is continuing this work at Cardiff Metropolitan, leading on the enhancement of personal tutoring and induction across the university.
Plans for the future
Joanna would like to continue supporting staff in their development, providing mentoring and CPD sessions for staff on assessment and authentic learning. She really enjoys the consultancy work she is involved in and would like to develop more community courses that raise awareness of disability and inclusive practice, so more people are able to access high quality sport and PE. Since completing her PHD, she would also like to share her findings with a wider audience by publishing papers related to teacher identity and the lived experience of trainee teachers. Joanna also wants to continue to enhance the student experience at Cardiff Metropolitan, so all students have the opportunity to reach their potential.
