National Teaching Fellow 2011
Institution at the time of award: University of the Arts London
Dr Shân Wareing became PVC for Student Experience & Education at London South Bank University in May 2015.
Prior to this, Shân had been Dean of Learning and Teaching Development at the University of the Arts London since 2005, leading teams of colleagues in the development and delivery of the University’s learning and teaching strategy, professional development in learning and teaching, e-learning and, recently, student enterprise and employability. Her work is driven by the belief that all students should be given the opportunity to learn to the best of their ability and that, whether at present high fliers or struggling, good teaching enables everyone to achieve more.
Shân led the introduction of a new assessment and feedback system in 2009. Using explicit marking criteria the system has changed the way over 15,000 students are assessed, fostering constructive feedback with a focus on improving future work. The changes brought in more analytical and diagnostic assessment practices, providing a basis for the moderation conversations amongst co-markers and external examiners, and contributing to effective standards, particularly across large cohorts and from year to year.
These changes were designed to enable students to learn better from their feedback, and student comments on the new processes include ‘It was interesting to find out exactly how we were getting marked … I could actually see what was going on in the tutor’s head ... so I understood and was more satisfied with the mark I got, … because I completely understood what was going on’.
Shân is a champion of students and places learning at the heart of everything that she does. She has successfully built her background in teaching English Literature, Linguistics, English as a Foreign Language (EFL), English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and study skills into her current educational development activity. She is a Senior Fellow of the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) and the Co-ordinator of their Fellowship Scheme.
Her current areas of interest include institutional research and its implications for policy and practice. Outside interests include competitive rowing - although it’s hard to get out much in a boat at the moment while her three children are little.
