Technician of the Year for Computer Science
Gerald High is an engineering services technician at Abertay University in Dundee, where most of his work is carried out within the School of Science, Engineering and Technology.
He started at The Dundee Institute of Technology in June 1993, which later became Abertay University. Gerald has been employed at Abertay for more than 20 years, and over this time his work has changed considerably. Originally more focused on the traditional elements of mechanical engineering and manufacturing, his work has since become more involved with the integration of mechanical engineering and computing. He is currently working on a 3D printed walking robot with a Raspberry Pi Computer control system.
Gerald works very closely with students and staff in the university’s specialist laboratories in order to develop and implement new, current, and interesting practical labs. Examples of this would be labs developed in the use of Arduino Microcontrollers, Raspberry Pi Computer systems, Electric Imp WIFI systems, GSM mobile technologies, working towards the integration of all of these systems.
Working with the students is a part of the job that Gerald enjoys very much, and is always inspired by their enthusiasm: “I work within a very supportive school that is very willing to embrace new technology, which seems to be changing at an ever increasing rate, and I hope to continue to be involved in this exciting time.”
