National Teaching Fellow 2015
From 2008-2013 Ingrid Murphy led the world-renowned Ceramic department at Cardiff Metropolitan University. In 2011, based on her own research, she led the development of the ‘Maker’ subject focusing on fusing traditional craft skills with new and emerging processes in digital design and fabrication.
Ingrid began her teaching career in 1993 and while she taught a range of Art and Design disciplines, ceramics is her passion. A dynamic teacher, she is continuously exploring how to enhance student learning and in 2013 was awarded the University’s Student-led Teaching Fellowship for Innovative Teaching. She employs a humanist approach to constructivist learning and is truly student-centred in her approach. One student said:
“Ingrid Murphy connects to every and each of her students, she seeks out our individual creativity and helps us reveal to ourselves the core of our imagination, she teaches us how to think and inspires us to become the best we can possibly be.”
Ingrid designs learning and teaching environments that promote immersive engagement for learners, be they physical, social or virtual. She has developed comprehensive online teaching resources to support teaching process skills in Ceramics, and an Opensource virtual learning environment which creates an online community of practice. While benefitting her own students this also serves to bring this threatened subject to a wider audience. A student commented:
“Ingrid is constantly looking ahead at the newest, innovative technologies that might assist us learning. Ranging from the introduction of QR codes to digital printing to the use of AR in learning and expression.”
A practising ceramic artist, Ingrid exhibits internationally, and was a recipient of the Arts Council of Wales Creative Wales award for individual practice in 2010. She currently works with historical ceramic artefacts and uses augmented reality, 3D scanning and 3D printing together with traditional ceramic processes to both physically and digitally hack these artefacts, in doing this Ingrid animates the inanimate. She has a studio in France, La Perdrix, and it is here she engages in action research, developing dynamic and transformative co-learning projects with her students.
