Professor Isabella Wai-yin Poon is a Professor at the Statistics Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and is the Pro-Vice Chancellor/ Vice President of the University, responsible for the strategic development of the University in the area of education. Professor Poon has a passionate interest in enhancing teaching and learning, and has designed and taken the lead in implementing many large-scale teaching-related projects and institutional researches that support the development as well as quality enhancement of teaching and learning in higher education. Her board experience in assessing teaching innovation and quality encompasses evaluation of individual teachers, programmes and institutions, inclusive of both government-funded and self-financing institutions, and extends to various levels of the education hierarchy.  

Professor Poon was one of the two professors who were conferred the Award for Teaching Excellence launched by The University Grants Committee of Hong Kong in the inaugural year 2011. The award citation is as follows: “Professor Poon Wai-yin is a fully committed and selfless academic in advancing learning and teaching in higher education. Her own development as an educator has greatly contributed to her adopting learner-centred approaches in her work, as well as the spreading of such practices. As a driver for change, her leadership in bringing a cultural shift within her institution has been most impressive. Professor Poon indeed exemplifies exceptional commitment to and excellence in teaching, and she will contribute significantly to the UGC sector in this area”.
