Technician of the Year for Social Work and Social Policy
Matt Cornock has worked as the web and virtual learning environment (VLE) co-ordinator in Social Policy and Social Work at the University of York since 2009. As a learning technologist Matt has applied expertise in the role technology can play in education, improving the quality of blended learning by supporting the professional development of staff. As one colleague comments:
“Matt is able to achieve a rare balance between technical know-how and user-friendly advice and guidance that makes my job much easier than it might otherwise be. His skills have transformed my teaching practices through the VLE – a transformation that benefits all students and staff.”
Matt's contribution in the department has also included creating pre-arrival 'preparing to study' sites, featuring videos of staff to reassure and inform incoming students, and the convening of an extracurricular social media project for social science students. This project helps students improve their employability for public and third sector organisations, gaining the confidence and skills to undertake group projects, create video, audio and blogs, and communicate effectively.
Recently, challenging assumptions about students’ confidence in the digital age, Matt has co-developed a website, readingonscreen.com, to support students' use of technologies for education. The site provides advice on digital annotation, choosing a device and the use of assistive technologies by all students to support paper-less and collaborative study.
Matt will be moving to a new role within the University's E-learning Development Team in July, co-ordinating York's lecture recording service and advising colleagues across the institution in their use of learning technologies.
