Anne Phillips’ approach to teaching and learning has been influenced by her background as a Diabetes Specialist Nurse. Her personal pedagogical philosophy engages interdisciplinary health professional students in practice changing education in a wide range of diabetes care delivery across the UK and internationally. Through reflecting on learning into practice and practice into learning, Anne stimulates this catalyst in education for diabetes practice development.
Anne leads a wide range of innovative health professional programmes and leads a team of nurse lecturers.
Impact of work
Anne works nationally and internationally with practice changing education, policy, guidance and support for practitioners in their partnership work with people with diabetes accessing care.
Anne has received consistently excellent student feedback and she views the supervisor and learner relationship as crucial; she has consistently sought to enable learners to achieve their full potential.
Recognition of this by students resulted in being presented the 2012 University of York Supervisor of the Year Award. A nursing student from York commented that:
‘Anne is one in a million, she goes above and beyond for all her students, despite her very busy schedule she never stops giving support and encouraging us to be the very best and do the very best we can.’
Anne understands the importance of working with health care teams and has a model of collaboration in all her educational provision. In 2014, Anne was recognised as an Outstanding Diabetes Educator by the NHS Quality in Care awards whose feedback commented that ‘Anne’s drive and passion ensures clinical practice influences the development of clinically relevant academic modules, and also that evidence and theory can influence practice and act as a prompt catalyst for change.’
Anne works nationally with NHS networks and internationally with diabetes colleagues in Japan and India to further diabetes education and care. In 2016, Anne was recognised as a Queen's Nurse.
Plans for the future
Anne is going to further share good practice with international partners to make a real difference through education to the experience of people with diabetes. Her philosophy is: educated practitioners delivering the best possible care is the optimum for people with diabetes.
