Technician of the Year for Medicine and Dentistry
Sarah Cooper joined the University of Portsmouth in 2010. Her main job role is to help create online unit information and assessments, supporting academics and students to use the online learning environment.
In 2012, the University took the decision to transfer all units to a new online learning platform (Moodle). To support this, Sarah ran and delivered staff development workshops, one-to-one meetings with unit co-ordinators and sessions with students. In the evaluation phase of the project one of the principal lecturers wrote:
“Sarah’s ability to guide and support clinical staff in acquiring the skills needed to help us be more creative and resourceful in our teaching and assessment of students is inspirational!”
Having implemented the transfer of all units, Sarah continues to work closely with staff and students to improve the system. In response to feedback from students that they found elements of the site difficult to navigate, Sarah added a series of bespoke shortcuts/tooth shaped navigation buttons.
Sarah has recently worked with our level five undergraduate students who are studying an advanced behavioural science unit. She has helped these students to develop a wiki that will draw together an understanding of change management and its relationship to patient behaviour. This work forms an assessed element of the student’s work and unit outcomes. One student wrote:
“Sarah’s technical know-how and ability to simplify even the most technical things is invaluable. She always responds quickly to our cries for help!”
