Experienced route to HEA Fellowship

If you’re an experienced teaching academic or learning support staff, you can apply directly to the HEA for a Fellowship.

The first step for prospective applicants is to decide what category of Fellowship you wish to apply for. Your career stage and professional experience will determine your eligibility for the award of Associate Fellow (AFHEA), Fellow (FHEA), Senior Fellow (SFHEA) or Principal Fellow (PFHEA).

Applicants may apply online by logging into MyAcademy. Check your account details are correct so that you receive email correspondence. The application process consists of an Account of Professional Practice (APP), two supporting statements from referees and payment of a fee where applicable. The most prestigious awards of SFHEA and PFHEA carry additional application requirements.

Your APP will demonstrate that you meet a ‘descriptor’ of the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF), depending on your stage of Fellowship. For further guidance, please see HEA Fellowships.

HEA Fellowships are a great way of implementing a professional recognition programme within any HE institution. The UKPSF offers a structured framework to reward successful higher education professionals and is a useful tool for career planning. If you are a teacher or learning support staff, gaining Fellowship serves to highlight the professionalisation of teaching within your institution and is attractive to students.

If you’ve completed an HEA-accredited personal development programme, the alternative route to Fellowship is to apply through our accredited route.
