This year sees a new addition to the HEA calendar, our first Annual Debate, on the evening of the second day of the Annual Conference, following a three course meal at the Mercure Hotel in Manchester.
The cost to attend is £80 for Strategic and Access Partners (please use the drop down menu to select your institution for the exact cost). The approximate timings for the evening are:
- Drinks reception: 18.30
- Welcome and three course dinner: 19.00
- Debate: 21.00
Back in Autumn 2016, we crowdsourced ideas for the topic through social media and email, by asking you to finish the sentence “This house believes…” We synthesised your responses and cut it down to four statements that you have now voted on. The winner was:
“This house believes that the assessment of teaching excellence is a futile exercise as it is inherently immeasurable.”
Phyllida Hancock is the host for the evening, managing proceedings and encouraging a lively and engaging exchange. Andy Westwood and Smita Jamdar will speak in favour of the proposed motion, while the opposing team – Eric Stoller and Mark Jones – will argue against. The outcome of the debate will be decided by those in the room. The debate will provide an opportunity for guests to discuss a crucial learning and teaching issue with our expert panel.
