New to Teaching in Higher Education is a one-day practical workshop aimed at supporting and inspiring those who are just beginning their careers in higher education. The day is specifically designed to take you from ‘surviving’ to ‘thriving’ in your teaching practice, help you to pick up teaching tips, get to grips with teaching methods, and respond to the curriculum demands so you can really inspire your students.
Making the transition into a teaching role in higher education can be difficult. New to Teaching in Higher Education explores ways in which you can navigate that transition, and allow you to explore, share and learn alongside your disciplinary peers with a view to enhancing your teaching practice.
The following quotes, offered by some who have attended previous workshops, shed light on the workshop’s benefits:
“A very good imparting of knowledge and resources that can be used by new lecturers, held in a supporting and accepting environment in which to share opinions and ideas.”
“An excellent day with a good group size, which helped discussions. Very well facilitated. We covered a lot of ground, and it gave me a lot of food for thought.”
The New to Teaching in Higher Education workshop makes use of key pedagogical approaches, while also engaging with the HEA’s tools, frameworks and resources. During the afternoon, sessions will allow you to compare notes, experiences and ideas with a supportive network of peers (discipline specialties of delegates permitting) – the kind of expertise you can take away and put into practice in your classroom. The workshop also enables you to accumulate evidence that can be used in support of an application to become a HEA Fellow.

The day is open to academics who are just starting out on their career, and who want to develop their teaching practice by sharing with others from different institutions. Previous participants have included graduate teaching assistants, graduate tutors, research staff and new to teaching staff.
The workshop is led by HEA academic leads.
Our New to Teaching in Higher Education workshops accommodate your professional learning needs from the beginning. If you’re new to teaching or supporting student learning and want to formalise your experience and to progress, HEA Associate Fellowship could add great value to your professional teaching experience.
