Taking those first steps into teaching can be challenging. That’s why Advance HE has designed a bespoke set of New to Teaching in HE training events, aimed at nurturing and developing professional learning skills right from the very beginning.
New to Teaching in STEM is an online course aimed specifically at those who are new to teaching in STEM, or have received no formal training in HE teaching.
New to Teaching in STEM is designed to enhance your understanding and knowledge of critical areas of practice; knowledge which will, in turn, benefit your students and complement the overall reputation of your academic institution.
“There are institutional courses that provide an overview of what it’s like to teach everyone from mathematicians to arts and humanities students, whereas this is aimed specifically at those who understand the issues that come with teaching STEM students,” says Dr Kay Hack of Advance HE, part of the team which delivers the course. “Not only that, it is also delivered by people who have that experience.”
New to Teaching in STEM focuses on four key areas, namely (i) designing and planning learning activities which benefit students (ii) reviewing contemporary approaches to learning and teaching in STEM (iii) identifying effective and efficient forms of assessment and feedback that aid STEM students, and (iv) reflecting on how continuous professional development can enhance not only your teaching but also your students’ learning, benefitting your institution as a whole in the process.
The course is divided into four sessions, with two hours of study taking place each week over four weeks (the resources being available to participants for an additional three months afterwards). The online format provides added flexibility, acknowledging the time pressures faced by academics and scientists.

New to Teaching in STEM is an Advance HE course developed by Dr Kay Hack (Academic Lead, STEM), Sam Elkington (Academic Lead, Assessment and Feedback) and Professor Sally Bradley (Academic Lead for Professional Learning and Development). Kay, Sam and Sally will be moderating the online course and supporting your learning.
